3 mini mental work-outs for a strong brain

  • #1 Brush your teeth with your non-dominant hand. Research has shown that using the opposite side of your brain can result in a rapid and substantial expansion of in the parts of the cortex that control and process tactile information from the hand.
  • #2 Shower with your eyes closed. Your hands will probably notice varied textures of your own body you don’t “see,” and will send messages back to your brain. Try using just your tactile senses. Locate the taps solely by feel, and adjust the temperature.
  • #3 Take a new route to work or switch seats at the table. By switching off your ‘auto-pilot’ (routine) and have a new experience, your brain will be activated.

Your brain needs Omega-3: why again?

You probably already knew that your brain needs Omega-3 to function well. But do you know why? Read all about it here:

Our body consists of billions of different cells such as muscle cells, blood cells or brain cells. Cells that stop working well die and are replaced by new cells. This keeps our body functioning properly.

Omega-3 fatty acids are an important component of cells. They keep them flexible and are also involved in transmitting signals within a cell and between different cells, which will keep your organs working properly.

Omega-3 fatty acids are active throughout our body, but the highest concentration of Omega-3 (DHA) can be found in our brain. A large part of our brain consist of fats of which 25% is DHA. It plays an essential role in for example transmitting signals between (brain) cells, the creation of new brain cells and the enhancement of their functionality. DHA is therefore very important for a healthy functioning brain which gives you the ability to learn or remember well. As your body hardly produces any Omega-3 itself, make sure you get enough.
